Why was this app made?

We were tired of gathering information early in the morning to plan the day on the water.  At least 5 apps, sometimes more.   We thought it would be useful if all of that decision making process was made for us and waiting when we woke up.   A few months later and many, many lines of code we started sharing it with a few expert fishing guides.  The feedback was positive and we just keep on improving it to what it is today.

A single app to give you everything you need.  That's our mission.  Oh, and no ads.  Ever.

How does all of this work?

How much time do you have?   Tons of data is collected and converted into a common format since each data source has data in different units of measure, collection intervals, etc.   Weather, wind, tides, sun, moon, water temps, pressure, etc.    Plus, we have detailed data for over 1200 locations including GPS coordinates, min and max water depth,  bottom types, best and worst wind directions, etc.    This location data combined with all current data for that day are run through our algorithms (secret sauce) to output the "best" locations to try that day.  The 361 team reviews these every day and either confirms they made sense or tweaks the algorithm.   Some DYI people rely mostly on the data metrics,  while others find value in the advice provided by the app.

We provide both - either decide for yourself or let us help you.  Configure your own weighted system that determines where to go.

So if we use this app, will we catch fish?

The best we can say is "good luck".    While there's a lot of logic that goes into locations we recommend for a given day,  fishing skills are still required.   Other boats may be in that location, or it just doesn't look good, or the fish may not be eating, or they might not be eating what you're throwing, or your presentation is off.   A lot of things have to go right to catch a fish (separate blog post) and while we know the app helps, you still need fishing skills.   Consider this an aid to enhance your odds of being successful.

As this catches on, aren't the locations going to be crowded?

Everybody doesn't get sent to the same locations.  The algorithm will return a list of good locations for you to try, and then we randomly pick 5 from that list to show you.   If you tap "where to go" again, you'll likely get 5 new locations, it just depends on how many meet the criteria for "good" at that particular time.  But you can also customize the weights to what you think they should be, and THEN the locations it recommends are based on that!

Why the price of $4.99?

For the price of a Big Mac every month, you can greatly enhance your chances of success on the water and bring some fish home.  361 Fishing started this app in 2018 and hasn't charged anything until July 2025.  Given the massive amounts of data we process every day, it became critical that we need to charge for the service in order to keep this thing going.   Also remember for your monthly price of $4.99, you have no ads and no in-app purchases.  You get it all.   And you can try it free for a week too.

The source of fishing insights in the app comes from many places.  
1. Texas Saltwater Fishing Magazine - we have 7 years of monthly issues of the magazine that are full of expert advice.  Much of that advice is now in the form of code in the app.  
2. Podcasts like "BiteMe - Texas Saltwater Fishing".  Every week there is something notable that ends up in code in the app.   "My favorite is the last 30 minutes of a major feeding time window" ... things like that end up in the code for "when to go".
3. Fishing guides - there's no substitute for talking to people who are on the water 300+ days out of the year. 
4. Other resources - mainly books and websites, be it on bathymetry, tides, the list goes on and on.

Will the app be available on Android?

An Android version is not planned at this time.  We recently had someone swap their Android for an IPhone just because of the app!

Updates are typically every 2 weeks but that includes minor fixes and performance enhancements.   Feature updates are usually about once per month.
